If you spend more than five minutes out in the backyard at The Sea Garden House, you are bound to make a fast friend. Usually, that friend comes in the form of a very curious, very forward, and completely endearing hen named Miss Cookie.
Lately, life on our coastal homestead has been a beautiful blur of slow remodeling inside, tending to the autumn vegetable beds outside, and enjoying the rhythms of homeschooling. But no matter what project we are working on, Miss Cookie ensures she is right at the center of the action.
Up Close and Personal
This week, she took her job as the flock supervisor to a whole new level. While trying to snap a few peaceful photos of the garden, I looked down to find Miss Cookie staring straight into the camera lens. No thoughts, just a fierce determination to see if the phone was secretly a handful of mealworms.
It is these little moments of backyard wonder that make chicken keeping so rewarding.
Why She’s a Flock Favorite
Every chicken in our backyard flock has a distinct personality, but Miss Cookie holds a special place in our hearts.
- The Ultimate Welcoming Committee: She is always the first to run to the coop door when she hears the back screen door click open.
- The Garden Helper: She takes her job of inspecting our weeded garden beds very seriously (even if she tries to eat the plants we actually want to keep).
- The Photobomber Extraordinaire: As you can see, she has absolutely no concept of personal space—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Cultivating Joy in the Everyday
Driven by the reminder in Jeremiah 29:5 to “build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce,” we are constantly reminded that a beautiful life is built out of these tiny, ordinary moments of joy. A cozy home isn’t just about the paint colors on the walls or the progress of a fixer-upper; it’s about the life, laughter, and feathers that fill the spaces in between.
Miss Cookie certainly brought a massive smile to our faces this Wednesday, and we hope her close-up brings a little bit of backyard whimsy to your week, too.
