A Rainy Afternoon and the Beauty of Small Beginnings: Our Linen Closet Makeover

There is a distinct kind of peace that comes with a rainy afternoon on the coast. When the weather keeps us tucked inside, away from our backyard garden and the shoreline, it always feels like an invitation from the Lord to slow down, look inward, and nurture the space we’ve been given.

This week, that invitation led me straight to our upstairs linen closet.

When we purchased our coastal fixer-upper a year ago, it was a house hidden from the street—a forgotten place that nobody else wanted. Since then, we’ve been tackling this home remodel room by room, project by project. In the middle of massive renovations, it is so easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer scale of what is left to do.

But as I spent a quiet afternoon measured out in floral wallpaper and soft pink paint, I was reminded of a beautiful truth: the small things truly add up.

It’s just a linen closet. It holds our everyday towels, extra sheets, and simple household supplies. But by layering it with a warm botanical print and refreshing the shelves, a dark, ignored corner has been transformed into a space that feels bright, intentional, and full of life.

It brought to mind the words of Zechariah 4:10: “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”

Building a home—much like cultivating a garden or homeschooling our children—is a slow, daily work of love. It doesn’t happen all at once. It happens in the quiet, faithful moments. It happens on rainy afternoons when we choose to bring beauty into the hidden corners.

Step by step, room by room, this house is becoming the sanctuary we dreamed of.

Tell me in the comments: What small project are you tackling in your home this season? How are you finding joy in the small beginnings?
